- OUR SCHOOL | Edenglen Primary School
Edenglen Primary School is a distinguished public school situated in the heart of Edenglen, Johannesburg. We are an English medium, co-educational primary school operating as part of the Gauteng Department of Education. Edenglen Primary School is a distinguished public school situated in the heart of Edenglen, Johannesburg. We are an English medium, co-educational primary school operating as part of the Gauteng Department of Education. Our proud history Edenglen Primary welcomed its first learners in 1978. We had just eight teachers and a single secretary, ably led by Principal SW Kieser. Since building of the Senior block was still underway, the student body was comprised of Grades 1 through 3 learners. Soccer and Netball were played, albeit with great enthusiasm, in the car park. Just a year later in January 1979, classes for Grade 4 to Grade 7 commenced with a full staff complement. Pupils wore the new school uniform with pride for the first time. The Edenvale Sports Club was commandeered to play sport. By the time the school was officially opened on 17 August 1979 by the Director of Education, Professor Dr JH Jooste, it was already full to capacity. The immigrant class was at the back of the hall and one Grade 1 class accommodated on the stage. By 1981, the school had grown enough to warrant the appointment of two heads of department. The following year was a big year for our sports programme: our long-awaited sports field was levelled, and grass planted. The netball fields and tennis courts were likewise completed. Shortly thereafter, for the first time in the then Transvaal, a Primary Soccer School Team, consisting of 22 boys, toured to the UK and Europe. Over the past three decades, the school has flourished. A Resource Centre was opened in 2005, as envisioned by past principal Mrs Rademan. An Art Room, Music Room and a Crèche have since been added, creating an even more nurturing environment for our learners – who remain our most treasured assets. That first intake of 252 children has grown to a current enrollment of over 1 300 children. Edenglen Primary continues to attract a high calibre of staff and has become a sought-after institution of learning by its surrounding community. Our vision and mission Our School Prayer: I shall pass through this world but once. Any good that I can do or any kindness I can show to any human being or animal, let me do it now. Let me not defer or neglect it for I shall not pass this way again. We regard our school as a large family in which every single member connected to the school is important. We work to create a friendly, happy atmosphere in our school, where pupils are loved and encouraged to develop intellectually, spiritually, morally, socially, and physically. To strive to provide the best education possible. To cultivate an atmosphere of mutual respect. To work together as a team, i.e. the educators, parents, learners, the community, and the Gauteng Education Department. To assist those learners who are in need of extra attention, i.e. remedial and feeding schemes, etc. To maintain good discipline so as to ensure that no unwarranted disruption of academic or extra-curricular activities takes place. To inculcate pride in school and its standing in the community. To put into practice our School Prayer and School Motto: ‘Knowledge for Life’ . Edenglen has pupils from many different backgrounds; however, we stress that all people are of one race: ‘The Human Race’. Our school Motto 'KNOWLEDGE FOR LIFE' supports this attitude, and encourages an environment in which self-esteem, independence, responsibility, and tolerance can grow and thrive. School Code of Conduct Security The safety of your child/ren is of the utmost importance to the school and its staff. Reminder of various safety procedures in place. "We can change the world and make it a better place. it is in your hands to make a difference." "We can change the world and make it a better place. it is in your hands to make a difference." Nelson Mandela Nelson Mandela Nelson Mandela Nelson Mandela In the spirit of Nelson Mandela, we would like to participate as a school in a Mandela Day Drive. These are the two worthy projects that we have decided to endorse this year. The first involves donating a carton of fat-free long-life milk which is use to feed orphaned baby rhinos. South Africa is blessed to have these magnificent creatures, but illegal rhino poaching has caused catastrophic results for the rhino population, which is facing constant depletion because of poaching. You may donate as many cartons as you like, so long as it is fat-free long-life milk which is easier for the baby rhinos to digest. https://ferriscars.com/supercare-rhino-run/ The second project involves collection donations for the SPCA. As all are aware the SPCA is always in need of food, blankets and funds especially with the ever-growing number of surrendered animals and the number of pets not sterilised. You may donate funds to the school, food or blankets. Any form of donation and fund raising makes a huge difference to the SPCA's ability to care for the animal and makes a difference in the community. During the third term we will be handing over all our donations to the chosen charities and we know that they will appreciate any heartfelt gesture made to them. The aim of this initiative is two-fold. Firstly, we would like to make the children aware that there are people and animals less fortunate than themselves in all aspects of life and that if we are in a position to share a little of what we have, we should. Secondly, we would like to educate them about the different charities. Thank you in advance for the support. Rhino Orphan Supercar Run 2024 Schools Brochure

We also believe that preparing children to take on a meaningful role in society in the years to come means taking the time to assist each learner reach his or her full potential in all areas of school life. At Edenglen Primary School, we believe in the holistic education of learners. We also believe that preparing children to take on a meaningful role in society in the years to come means taking the time to assist each learner reach his or her full potential in all areas of school life. With our modern and reliable resource facilities and a wide educational infrastructure, Edenglen provides learners an idea base from which they can explore – and realise - their full potential. Academics Academics remains one of our most important priorities. We teach strictly according to the curricular policy and prescriptions of the Curriculum Assessment Policy Statement (CAPS Curriculum). Formal assessment tasks, as captured in the CAPS curriculum, are done regularly and learners receive a formal assessment plan each term. These assessments, calculated according to the Departmental 1 to 7 -point scale, determine the final mark of each subject. Meanwhile, continuous informal assessment takes place daily according to various assessment strategies in preparation for formal assessment tasks. At the end of Term 2 and Term 4, learners from Grade 4 to 7 also write examinations according to a set examination time table. Recognition and academic awards are given to those who are placed within the Top Five, and subject awards are also given. Learner support Assisting us to support learners experiencing learning difficulties are a number of specialist within our immediate community. We refer learners to credible speech therapists, occupational therapists, and remedial therapists. We also have a speech therapist, an occupational therapist, and a remedial therapist who work on the school premises twice a week. This means therapy can be built into the learners’ school day. It also allows teachers and therapists to work more closely together, ensuring maximum benefit from the support programme. Should a learner require any of the above therapies, an assessment is carried out. Based on the outcome, an appropriate intervention programme is put into place. Where possible, this is incorporated into the classroom by the teacher. There may, however, be a need for the parent or guardian to take the child for additional therapy, which would be for the cost of the parent. Above all, parental involvement is the biggest support needed. Congratulations Term 1 Top 10
