Hooked on Books Easter Bunny and the Boss Date Night 2018 Inflatable Day 2018 Valentines Disco 2018 Scholar patrol We received complaints about traffic in the mornings so as a staff, we became "traffic officers" in our school tracksuits to monitor the cars and help our little ones cross the road safely. Great fun was had by all. Whilst many schools host an annual “Big Walk”, the PA wanted a walk with a difference – a walk that would encourage families to spend time together and interact with one another in a spirit of community building. This year, on Saturday 3 February, the PA surpassed even its own expectations by selling a whopping 1 200 tickets to the event! Parents and children alike rose to the challenge and dressed in whatever funky, super hero outfit they could find. Those who were more sedate in nature were content just to participate in the 5km walk, whilst the more athletically minded decided to sprint in record time. Even the teachers led by example, with the water points manned (or should we also say womanned?) by staff in funky super hero costumes! The Funky Walk really did prove to be a community project. As soon as we sold our 1 000th ticket, organisers had to move fast to arrange ambulances on standby on the field, as per municipal regulations. Eager to contribute towards the festive atmosphere and to ensure that the day would not be marred by any unforeseen injuries or calamities, not one but three ambulances came to our rescue to stand guard at the Finish Line. Fortunately, their services were not required, but we went the extra mile to make sure that nothing was left to chance. After an exuberant race to the end, many families stayed behind to recharge their batteries and feast on tasty food like Prego rolls, boerewors rolls, hamburgers and hotdogs. Spot prizes were given to those who had entered the race and the fun continued long after the race had ended. To all the PA members who organised the Funky Walk, kudos to you for a superb event and a big thank you to the teachers for working from 06:30 until the race had ended. To the parents, children and community members who participated in this event, we extend a special word of appreciation for making the day such a huge success. Roll on 2019 – we can’t wait to see what a fantastic event the next Funky Walk will be! Easter Raffle Winners: 1st Prize – Molemo Mphuthi 2nd Prize – Julie McAdam 3rd Prize – Awande Mahlobo Child who raised the most money – Antony Kirk Class that raised the most money will be announced on 12 April and will receive a pizza lunch. A big thank you to our Easter Egg Hunt sponsors, Karaglen Superspar and Birchgate Spar – the learners had a ball searching the school grounds for the eggs. We would also like to extend a big thank you to the PA – all the parent and the partners of the PA who give up precious time to make events successful and fun for everyone. Thank you for all your efforts, the events have been enjoyed by all. Grade 7 Career Day 2018 Awards 2018 Foundation Phase Awards 2018 Intersen Phase Awards 2018 Grade 7 Kwalata 2018 The EPS 40th Birthday Party Grade 1 Orientation Art Exhibition 2018 Science Scufflers First day at school After a restless night and much tossing and turning, it was time to hand out the tissues, fix the appearance and get ready for the first day in Grade One – and that was just for the parents! The first day in Grade One proved to be an exciting event for most of our learners. The children were excited to meet their teachers for the first time and to see where they would sit. Of course, most importantly, they couldn’t wait to see what their lunch boxes contained! New friendships were forged over sandwiches and tasty delights which had been packed for this special day. Fears overcome, there was much fun to be had as boys and girls played together on the jungle gym and told their new friends all about themselves. After handing in books and stationery, some children went on a tour of the school and were shown two of the most important places in a school – the toilets and the tuck shop. Then it was back to some fun learning and before you knew it, the bell had rung and it was time to go home. Only one more sleep before the fun would begin all over again!

  • LEADERSHIP PROGRAMME | Edenglen Primary

Leadership programme Edenglen Primary is committed to developing the leadership potential of all our learners - and teachers. From Grade 1, children are assigned responsible tasks, like being a tuck or class monitor. These everyday interactions help instil core values such as independence and the willingness to help others. As children move from grade to grade, acknowledgement is given to leaders in the academic, cultural, and sporting spheres. Sports captains exemplify the spirit of the school, which means celebrating team victories as the accomplishment of the entire group, and accepting defeat with dignity and grace, using every opportunity to grow and improve. Sports matches, and more recently, sports tours, provide our ‘little leaders’ with the opportunity to exercise their talents and display their unique abilities in both formal and informal settings. Leadership positions are further recognised through tasks such as flag bearing duties, which require constant diligence and dedication, and Media Monitors and Scholar Patrol, which require consistent effort throughout the year. In Grade 7 those who are able to lead and guide their peers are selected as Prefects, with much prestige attached to the role. Our selection process continues throughout the Grade 7 year, so that learners can better appreciate that developing leadership qualities is a process as opposed to an overnight achievement. Our leaders are also held accountable for how they progress through the challenges they face so that they realise they are part of the wider community which they serve. Edenglen Primary School is extremely proud of our leaders and the manner in which they represent our school. We are also proud of those who choose to follow positive role models in their day-to-day interactions, for this in itself is a form of quiet and responsible leadership. To all those who make this positive difference, we salute you! May your journey to greatness continue unbounded! 2019 Prefects Our prefects for 2019: Seated in the front left to right: Deputy Head Girl, India Jardine, Head Girl, Nthati Monamodi, Head Boy, Nthato Monamodi, Deputy Head Boy, Ronan Govender From left to right from the back row: Raelene Pillay, Bradley Erasmus, Sudhir Tilakram, Utara Sununan, Gabriela Rodrigues, Shivarya Rampersad, Jordan Skipp, Kevin Flannagen, Connor Lewis, Samuel Greenfield, Neo Thoka, Kiara Basdew, Inga Mfingwana, Mmetlabontle Tantij, Baraka Thiongo, Emmanuel Gitonga, Reece Govender, Warrick Small, Jamie Adkins, Lwandile Thembi, Siyabonga Mkoni, Athenkosi Yekani, Carla Kasala, Yuvana Naidoo, Ashleigh Preston, Ishka Duwarka, Keyuri Premlall, Taybah Peterson, Chelsey Wain, Colby Newman, Ciara Hoffman. • EXTRA MURALS | Edenglen Primary School

Term 2 Extra Murals & Lesson Timetable Extra-curricular activities at Edenglen Primary are exactly that - an invaluable extension of the curriculum and the educational experience we aim to provide. While not compulsory, participation is strongly encouraged, and a majority of our pupils are involved in one or more activity. Athletics All learners are invited to take part in Athletics. Interhouse? Learners have the opportunity to excel during the athletics season Which is when? by taking part in interschool Athletics meetings. Choir Choir is offered year-round to our Juniors (Grade 1 to Grade 3) and to our Seniors (Grade 4 to Grade 7). This is carried out by qualified music teachers at our school, who work to ensure that when the stage lights go on the quality of our choirs is outstanding. Both choir groups work towards competing in the annual Eisteddfod and various other events where their talents can be showcased. Cross Country Interested learners take on various cross-country trails as they work towards representing their District at the end of the season which is when? This activity is offered from U9 and is limited to U13 participation. Please clarify? Do only the U13s compete formally? Cricket Mini Cricket is offered to Grade 1 and Grade 2 learners. Our aim at this level is developing critical motor skills and a basic knowledge of the game of cricket. Players get the chance to show off their skills at Mini Cricket matches, which take place on Saturday mornings at various venues during Term 1. Senior Cricket is offered to Grade 3 and Grade 4 learners. In higher grades like Grade 5-7 strategic play and improvement of skill becomes the focus and coaching becomes more technical. Cricket teams play 20-Over matches during the week against schools in and around the Edenvale area. Dance Dance is offered only to our Grade 3 group on a voluntary basis to those learners who have some ‘slick moves’ to show off for the Eisteddfod. Learners are coached throughout Term 2 in preparation for competition in Term 3. There is much fun to be had here! Eisteddfod The National Eisteddfod of South Africa is the biggest cultural competition for school learners in the country. It offers various opportunities for performers in all communities to showcase and develop their talent in music, dance, theatre, and fine arts. Staged during the third term, the Eisteddfod has become a highlight for learners participating in the Arts, including English poetry, Drama, Afrikaans Poetry, Drama, Group Dancing for Grade 3, Speekkoor for Grade 4 and Grade 5; as well as Vocal Categories for Senior and Junior Choir, and Art Grade 1 – 7. Preparation and practice for these activities take place during Term 2, with various groups and individuals competing at organised Eisteddfod competitions during Term 3. Hockey Grade 1 - Grade 3 learners are offered Hockey on a smaller scale than the older grades. These learners are given the opportunity to learn the basic skills and principles of the game while competing against other schools and playing their matches on a smaller field space than normal. As learners progress and improve upon their Hockey skills, field space is increased, until they are introduced to full field Hockey by the time they reach Grade 7. Media Our beautiful Media and Resource Centre is stocked with the latest book titles, both fiction and non-fiction. It’s also equipped with individual work stations, which are popular with learners and teachers for accessing the Internet for research. Our very own Media Centre teacher, Mrs Dos Santos, presents courses on how to use the Media Centre effectively and how to encourage reading programmes to teachers from other schools. Netball and Mini Netball During the summer season, Grade 1 -3 learners take part in Mini Netball as an introduction to the sport. Grade 4 - Grade 7 girls are then coached in advanced Netball skills. All teams compete against schools in and around the Edenvale area, giving all participants an opportunity to hone their match skills in a competitive environment. Rugby Rugby is offered to Grade 4 - 7 learners on a competitive level where players get to face off against other schools in a rugby league. To ensure the safety of all learners taking part in the sport, all coaches are Boksmart Certified and World Rugby Qualified. Before they are able to join rugby in their grade 4 year, Grade 3 learners receive a crucial introduction to the basics of the sport as well as safe practice during play. Soccer Soccer is a crowd-pleaser at our school, with all learners from Grade 1 - 7 joining in on the fun. There is provision for a girls team and the Sports Co-ordinator is hard at work to get this going. Grade 1 - 3 learners enjoy playing soccer on a smaller format than the older age groups. Once again this allows them to get used to the basic skill requirements of the game before it becomes competitive in the older age groups. Speech & Drama For those learners more dramatically inclined, our Speech & Drama Club is the perfect platform for the development of that star quality and stage presence. Learners take part in Term 3 competitions at the Eisteddfod. Check us out on Page 14
